Tips & Tricks for Travelling in a Skoolie (or any RV)
Here are some things we are doing differently from last year - and they are working great so far.
Microfiber towels instead of cotton towels - dry so much faster and take up way less space.
Classroom caddies for lunch boxes - these make it *somewhat* cleaner when our kids eat in their car seats. And, they make me feel like a flight attendant when I deliver them each their own little lunch caddy.
All meals in the car seat or outside on the picnic blanket/picnic table. Last year they would eat at the little folding table the bus has (it is very cute) and it was not great. They were up and down from the table, food was spilled everywhere and it was a hassle to clean, kids wanted to sit on the couch and that usually resulted in spills. You get the picture. This year, they are either in their carseat with the caddy or outside. The older three sit at a picnic table and the younger two sit in these little camping chairs we have for them. I quickly learned after their first meal outside that they needed to be on a blanket because they were eating as much dirt as they were food.
A baby gate. In the past, when the kids were roaming the bus at a stop they would find their way to the driver’s seat and play with the wheel, buttons, and dials - what kid wouldn’t. They would also, sometimes, find themselves falling down the few steps to the front door of the bus. So this year, we put a retractable baby gate up between the tiny front section and the rest of the bus. It works perfectly and takes up hardly any space.
A large laundry basket. Last year, we stuffed the laundry in a cubby that was meant for diapers, wipes, and other baby necessities. Additional note: Josh read this before I published it and wanted me change ‘cubby’ to ‘chubby cubby.’ Maybe one day he will write his own post and none of you will know when he is being serious or not. Back to the chubby cubby - it drove me nuts. I am used to doing at least two loads of laundry every day, so it is already unusual for me to have it piling up for a few days, not to mention spilling out of a cubby. But, we got a larger laundry basket that fits at the end of one of the bunk beds and it works great - the kids can access it, it keep it out of the way, and it holds everything we need washed until we get to a camp site with laundry machines.
That’s all I can think of for now. We went on a hike today in Sunshine Meadows and it was great. Here are some photos from “the mountain” as our kids say.
